- My objective has always been to produce intelligent dogs with good conformation, a strong hunting desire, good game sense, a keen nose, pace and style and a sound temperament.
- The natural abilities of the Irish Red and White Setter held fantastic potential and thus began my interest in developing top class working and field trail Red and White Setters and in doing so helping preserve an important part of our canine heritage.
- Field Trials are the stage where the best bird dogs an be measured against each other, therefore successfully competing at trials was important in demonstrating the capabilities of the Irish Red and White Setter and establishing its credibility as a top class bird dog. It was also important in that a lot of early interest in the breed was in its show ring potential.
- Given that the gene pool was relatively small an outcross programme was agreed in the early ‘80’s consisting of a small no of matings to selected Irish Red Setters. I took part in this programme using FTH Slievebawn Braken . This produced Craigrua Finn who is the grandsire of my first two Field Trial Champions, Craigrua Flame and Craigrua Firefly. This was unfortunately the only outcross in the programme to be successfully followed through succeeding generations.
- Craigrua is the premier kennel for working and Field Trial Irish Red and White Setters. To date Craigrua Kennels has made up 6 Field Trial Champions along with 4 other Field Trial Champions made up by other owners and many other Field Trial winners/award winners.
